Dither.Live
Browser-based dithering editor built as a web design project — focused on speed, clarity, and a strong visual identity.
Dither.Live is a free, open-source, web-based dithering application that runs entirely in the browser. The project started as part of a web design practical project as apart of my second year studies, but it quickly became an opportunity for me to explore something I care about: the overlap between visual design and real functionality. I ended up creating a tool that people can genuinely use, and then designing a homepage and supporting pages around it.
Most dithering tools either feel slow and clunky, or like unfinished dev demos. The algorithms might be good, but the experience usually isn’t. I wanted something that feels like a real creative tool: quick to understand, fast to iterate, and visually considered.
I designed Dither.Live around one priority: real-time feedback. Changes update instantly as you adjust sliders and controls, unlike many online dithering tools that rely on slower, step-by-step processing. The tool supports multiple dithering algorithms, output sizing, canvas orientation, keyboard shortcuts, and a clean export flow.
- Add a first-run onboarding layer (tips + “start here” preset).
- Full accessibility pass (focus states, ARIA, contrast, keyboard order).
- Presets: save/load settings.
- Mobile-friendly layout mode (at least browse/export cleanly).
- Further optimisation for large images (preview + processing efficiency).
- Improve gallery workflow and moderation (Discord or web submissions).
- More export options + clearer size/quality controls.
- Compare mode (before/after or A/B algorithms).
